Beltway Networking – In today's business world, why is networking important?

Steve Dorfman – There are no competitors -- only partners. There is so much we can learn from one another. Our motto is "Sharing strategies for success."

Beltway Networking – What does it take to be successful in networking?

Steve Dorfman – First, is acknowledging that great relationships, and often friendships, begin this way. Many people have shared that they don't feel comfortable jumping into a group of strangers. For anyone feeling uncomfortable about getting out there and meeting other professionals, I say this -- anytime we can put ourselves in an uncomfortable setting, we create a growth opportunity. Sharing stories with one another and having a willingness to listen are key. People just want to be heard.

Beltway Networking – Do you recommend individuals having a diversified networking group and why?

Steve Dorfman – Sure. The more diverse your group, the more diverse your learning and sharing will be. You will learn and learn to share with a broader spectrum of people.

Beltway Networking – If you could share one piece of advice you have learned to make Networking more effective, what would it be?

Steve Dorfman – Share stories. Too often, we have to hear peoples' elevator speech -- the old grip 'n' grin. When you share a story of how you have helped a client, others begin to relate, see you as a person and begin to like you -- people like to do business with people they like.

Beltway Networking – Where can we find you networking?

Steve Dorfman – Non-networking groups.  When attending groups who simply share strategies for success, the networking happens naturally. I have co-founded the YPLG (Young Professionals Leadership Group). This group was inspired by a leadership breakfast that my co-founders and I still attend each month. I continue to meet amazing people.
